Chelsea 2011: The Magistrates’ Garden

The Magistrates’ Garden, designed by Kate Gould, won Silver gilt in the Urban Gardens section. It was built to celebrate 650 years of the Magistracy, and had lots of little interesting features.

All the plants were planted in multiples of three, as the magistrates sit in threes, and the water feature had three fountains.

A colourful, vertical living wall was placed in the centre of the rear wall, behind the fountains, to balance the space. It was surrounded by harsh, grey stone walls.

I loved the Plane trees which had been trained to provide shelter.
